Gone Girl: Trailer & Official Website

Posted on 22:57 by Unknown
So here it is in all its Fincherception glory: A trailer for a new movie that totally looks like a Fincher movie, actually directed by David Fincher. Dude, that man just keeps getting better. The precision and distinction of the cinematography is just unparalleled, and the synopsis available on Apple seems to provide a few more clues as to just what Fincher is up to with this:

"Gone Girl (...) unearths the secrets at the heart of a modern marriage. On the occasion of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) reports that his beautiful wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike), has gone missing. Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick’s portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble. Soon his lies, deceits and strange behavior have everyone asking the same dark question: Did Nick Dunne kill his wife?"

Thank you, Simon, for dropping all these promotional links. The official site for the film is findamazingamy.com, which clues you to further related social media outlets such as the film's Facebook and Twitter.

Easter Egg

I haven't verified this myself but absolutely do take fanatic contributor Torrence's word for it: If you dial the number advertised on the billboard in the trailer, you get to hear an excerpt from the "Gone Girl" audiobook. Great find, thanks for letting us know!

Today is the day Fincher wants to hit you as hard as he can: With a first poster for his upcoming "Gone Girl", and the film's first trailer later today. Awesomeness!

So now it's on to counting days until October 3... (Don't bother, it's still 172 to be exact.)

Coming Soon: "Gone Girl" Trailer

Posted on 07:06 by Unknown
Apparently, the trailer for David Fincher's next, "Gone Girl", is making the rounds right now, with last week's first look at CinemaCon. The Hollywood Reporter calls the piece "a very strong trailer", with a haunting soundtrack, and — come on, be serious — beautiful cinematography. Nothing unexpected for fanatics, however: Certainly a good sign that an early teaser or full-blown trailer for the film will hit the web for all of us to see very soon.

Thanks, Torrence, for the link:

Early Teaser: Fight Club 2

Posted on 01:36 by Unknown
Nuh, don't get your hopes up. Obviously this is not true. But while we wait to see just how Palahniuk expands on one of his outstanding intellectual properties... there's this: Adult Swim's "Ken Fight Club".

...and it could be sort of similar to Fight Club 2, actually.
Thank you, Manny!

So Basically Fight Club Sucks...

Posted on 02:07 by Unknown
Just when you thought that FIGHT CLUB may be Fincher's masterpiece — there's this: "Fight Club [is] a mean-spirited type of comedy, reliant on schadenfreude and the suggestion that you laugh at the unpleasantries of its characters’ existence, as well as your own."

In Early Talks

Posted on 12:06 by Unknown
Yup, I think that's the part I would like to cautiously highlight here: "In early talks". As for the rest, the headline speaks for itself. Kinda sounds like "The Social Network Revisited" to me.

Now all we need is to bring Andrew K. Walker in for a dark rewrite. And Tyler Durden.

New BMW Films: Gus Van Sant Tapped

Posted on 00:07 by Unknown
I am hopingy this whole story will shape up in a more Fincher-ish way soon. The Fincher exec produced BMW films of a decade ago were a great series of shorts, so was its "second season", overseen by Ridley and Tony Scott's RSA Films. At any rate, due to the series' infamy I decided to report on the possible 2014 comeback of the series — and as of right now Gus Van Sant ("Good Will Hunting", among many others) is reported as the first director to have signed on.

I was originally thinking this may be a new Reset Content venture... But let's wait and see how this thing shapes up and who will be on board.

House Of Cards: The Daily Show & Fincher Commentary

Posted on 00:02 by Unknown
So for most fanatics the new 13-hour season tracking the intrigue and malice of one Francis J. Underwood and his accomplice probably provided high-class binge-entertainment until Saturday afternoon. Was I one of those bingers? You might very well think that, I couldn't possibly comment. But if anyone should need more, well, here's a brief appearance of the man who put the "vice" in "vice president": on The Daily Show.

New BMW Films?

Posted on 14:53 by Unknown
A tiny little series that has created quite a buzz a decade ago, way back in the pre-YouTube age, is about to make its come back: As freshly announced BMW intends to "bring back" its highly praised short films — for whatever that means. Most likely there will be new episodes following the series' original concept, starring high profile actors and directors recruited from Hollywood's A-list. Will it be Clive Owen, though? And in order to justify this item on this blog: Will Fincher resume his exec producing duties — or better yet: This time, will he take the wheel for a Fincher directed action-packed BMW thrill-ride? Yeah, I'd go for that!

So, just in case this is the right time to shout-out suggestions: I'd love to see BMW shorts directed by Brad Bird, Nicolas Winding Refn, Alfonso Cuaron and definitively a new one from Joe Carnahan. (Now excuse me while I spend this blog's immense profits on a new car...)

Valentine's Day

Posted on 00:22 by Unknown
If I am not mistaken tomorrow is the big Valentine's Day — so let Netflix be your Valentine and prepare for a marathon House of Cards session.

While the second season of House of Card hits, Fincher is all but idly fainéant: His "Gone Girl" production wrapped on February 10th, now rushing into post production. And writer Gillian Flynn and Fincher will sit down for some intense scripting sessions, as HBO orders Fincher's US-adaptation of "Utopia" to series.

How's that for a packed slate?

Having seen the British mini-series, I know that "Utopia" seems a perfect fit and that the original left quite a few nuances and depths to be explored by a director as uncomprising and dark-minded as Fincher — with hopefully equally permissive oversight from HBO as Fincher negotiated for "House of Cards" with Netflix.

At any rate, "Happy Valentine's Day"!

Thanks to all you fine contributors. And here's the sources to what I have just relayed:

Composer Jeff Beal Talks HOC & Working With Fincher

Posted on 00:14 by Unknown
I love this little bass movement in the "House of Cards" title sequence, it had struck me in the very first trailer and still at the beginning of every episode this gets me. It's a great example of how music can capture the essence of a show or a character, and if that happens to be an unrelenting, scheming, predatory congressman — all the better.

Three weeks until Season 2...

Alexandre Desplat Interview

A little out of the current Fincher news, a kind of a tangent since it doesn't specifically talk Fincher, and possibly not for everyone: But I found this interview with Benjamin Button composer and Querflöten-virtuoso Alexandre Desplat very interesting. EW: Exclusive Look At "Gone Girl"

Thanks to everyone running this by my inbox, thanks EW for the preview: Lots of cool between-the-lines things to pick up from this little piece on Fincher's upcoming "Gone Girl".

My great appreciation of Fincher's casting instinct just keeps growing, and I get a sense that we are in for another great cinematic treat this fall — Fincher doing what he does best: being a sorcerer.

Pick up the latest copy of EW and own Fincher's cover photography IRL or if you can't, read the piece here:

David Fincher's "The Black Dahlia"

Posted on 23:49 by Unknown
+++ Updated 01/08/2014 +++
Big thanks to Gaelle for linking us to two interviews with Matz — and the courtesy of translating the Fincher bits. Thank you, Gaelle! That's awesome!

Yeah, no, it should still be James Ellroy who receives the bulk of the praise. However, french graphic novelist Matz obviously opted to share story credits with none other than David Fincher for his graphic reimagining of the gory mystery tale.

For francophiles this novel has been on bookstands since November 2013, and on how long the rest of us will have to wait for an english version? — I was not able to dig up any info so far.

Here's the amazon.fr page. "Le Dahlia Noir", hell yeah.
http://www.amazon.fr/Le-dahlia-noir...

Update

Head this way for two interviews with graphic novelist Matz, and do not head there if french fries your brain. I am very grateful to Gaelle for providing a translation of the "Fincher bits" (below)

http://salon-litteraire.com/...-matz/
http://www.ligneclaire.info/...-fincher-9773.html

Q: Fincher collaborated with you on the adaptation of "The Black Dahlia", but you worked for a long time with him on a possible film adaptation of your "Killer".

A: I have known David Fincher for several years - since the time when Paramount had an option on the film rights for my books "The Killer". David Fincher is a real fan of comics/graphic novels. In the course of our discussions, I spoke to him about my project to adapt "The Black Dahlia", and he told me that he had almost made a movie of it. It should have been a big movie starring Tom Cruise, but it didn't happen.
The fact remains that David Fincher had already thought a lot about the adaptation, and I have to say that he had a completely decisive and absolutely crucial idea for the album, that of the "rule" we apply over the cutting of the story, that is this idea to create (in a very regular, almost obsessing way) three streak by page, of one comic strip "box" each. Of course, there are variations, but it is the rhythm of the album. And from the moment he told me about it, I saw that it was possible to adapt the book as a graphic novel and how I could do it. Then, we discussed certain sequences particularly difficult to synthesize. He really had a very important role, and without him, this graphic novel would not be what it is. Everything is well between him and me. I do not despair for his adaptation of "The Killer". I'm working on it.

(From the second interview) Q: Is "adapting a story" a form of creation?

A: Of course. I made the translation in both directions. First in French then in English for Ellroy to read it. The Black Dahlia is a very dense novel which forces you to choose "your" plots. We worked in duet with Miles Hayman and with Ellroy who validated the whole book. He was not very fond of the very idea of our project at first. But our graphic novel is not a by-product. We wanted it to be of high quality.

Q: How did you work with Hyman and David Fincher?

A: I made a very precise cutting, box by box. Every page consists of three strips with a rhythm very similar to a "movie rhythm". I worked in duet with David Fincher, which is quite a big deal, he wanted to make a film of "The Black Dahlia". His version with Tom Cruise would have been a three hours film. The producers backtracked. Fincher likes comics. We thought about the story. He had ideas on the cutting, in particular on the Mexican sequence. Drawings were also validated by Ellroy. I told you that the scenario was in English. I counted that in the novel there are 85 important characters. I kept only half of them. I assure you that I was worried when I sent the scenario to Ellroy. But what a pleasure it also was!

* * *

Brian De Palma wound up directing the Hollywood adaptation of "The Black Dahlia", but as for thriller terrain I am not at all displeased Fincher found "Zodiac" to direct sort-of-instead.

Make sure to snoop around the graphic novel's Facebook site (Gould, thankfully, put it in the comments below) for some artwork impressions, and let us know if you hear anything about a release en anglaise.
